If you have a relative or friend that plays guitar, have them watch you once in a while and see if there is anything you should be doing differently. Remember that by and large, an electric guitar will be easier to play finger wise. The action the height of the strings above the neck is much lower than on an acoustic guitar. But, with an electric, you have to realize that part of playing one is also playing the amp. The amp is just one more object in the chain of sound and must be considered as such. All in all, if you can learn well from a book or dvd, go for it. You will save a ton of money. But if you feel unsure at all about things, by all means get a good guitar teacher.
