Piano Or Guitar?

Arguably the best instrument to start childrens music lessons with is the piano, simply because the piano encompasses all the elements of other instruments. The notes are presented in front of the performer in an orderly fashion, and usually note reading is learned as part of piano lessons. However, the guitar is very popular with children as the guitar is portable, and can be used in many different situations such as solo playing, playing in a band, acoustic playing, etc. Don't be surprised if you have a youngster that comes to you and wants to learn to shred, play metal, or rockabilly. These are all forms of rock music that kids play in bands.

Notes Or Chords?

Although a childrens music lessons may involve playing notes found on a piece of sheet music, the more popular way to learn at least at first is learning guitar chords. With chords a student can accompany themselves or play rhythm guitar in a band. From there, they can advance to higher levels of playing.

What To Expect At The First Childrens Music Lessons

In the first childrens music lessons, a student will be shown how to use a tuner to tune their guitar, or how to tune a guitar to itself. Unlike a piano, a guitar must be tuned almost every time it is played. Tuning a guitar is very easy to do once the method is learned. As stated before, learning chords is a good way to be introduce to playing the guitar, and learning the theory behind building chords can come later if desired. I say desired because a lot of students really just want to pick or strum and sing. They just want to be able to get a book of their favorite songs and have fun playing. Sometimes a lot of theory can kill the enthusiasm of learning an instrument. It really depends on the student, and what their goals are. Although there are children's music lessons for just about every conceivable instrument. It is hard to beat the portability, popularity, and just plain fun of a guitar.
