Classical Guitar Construction

Learning classical guitar requires the student to acquire a good quality instrument. Classical guitars differ from their folk and rock cousins in many ways. The most obvious is the strings. A classical guitar uses nylon strings verses metal. Originally classical guitar strings were made of cat's intestines. They were called cat-gut This practice has been discontinued, and now as stated, strings are made of nylon. Another difference is the width of the fretboard and neck. A classical guitar has a much wider neck that some find harder to play. It's just a matter of getting used to the width, and using correct hand positions to overcome difficulties. Because of the makeup of the strings, a classical guitar is much quieter than a steel string guitar. This makes them less than ideal for accompanying singers, although this type of guitar is used quiet frequently for this purpose. Actually the classical guitar has been used in a number of pop and rock hits with great success. An example is the Beatles song And I Love Her. George Harrison uses a classical guitar very effectively in this song. But if you are really interested in hearing classical guitar performances, check out anything by Andres Segovia.
